The Ruby Meadowhawk (Sympetrum rubicundulum) is a small dragonfly which is widespread across the northeastern United States. The field identification of this species and several closely related species can be very difficult at best and the taxonomy is not agreed upon by many experts. The images shown here are thought to be this species, but I certainly welcome any corrections. The top shot was a digital capture in Sugarcreek, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio. The bottom two shots are from Oostburg, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin. All shots were taken in August 2003 with a Canon EOS 10D and EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash.
