The Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) is a small diving duck which nests across much of the western United States and Canada. It nests in fresh-water marshes. The species winters across the southern portion of its breeding range as well as many areas of the southern United States and Mexico. The image of the basic plumaged male on the left was at Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in January, 2003, and was taken with a Canon EOS D60 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens. The next three shots show a female which was taken at the same location, in December, 2004, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. Scroll down for more shots. |

The five shots to the left and below show basic-plumaged Ruddy Ducks at Aransas N.W.R., Aransas Co., Texas, in November, 2006. These were shot with the same equipment as the December, 2004 shots immediately above. |

The two shots of female Ruddy Duck on the left were taken at San Bernard N.W.R., Brazoria Co., Texas, in March, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F.4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.

The male Ruddy Duck in the next five shots on the left was also at San Bernard N.W.R., in March, 2007. This bird is beginning to moult into breeding plumage. He stretched a foot, then a wing, then went back to feeding.
