The Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) nests in the Rocky Mountains of the western United States and winters in western Mexico. During migration it may show up anywhere, even the east coast of the U.S. It is a common visitor to feeders in west Texas in late summer and fall. The shots shown here, both of immature or females, are from the Davis Mountains of west Texas. The left shot was in August, 1999, showing a bird perched on the tip of a cholla cactus branch. The right shot was taken in September, 2001. Both shots were taken with Canon EOS 1N bodies and a 300mm F/2.8 L lens and 2X extender on Fuji Velvia. I do not have a good photo of a mature male, but will add one eventually.
