The Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) is a resident of south and west Texas, and most of New Mexico. It also occurs in parts of Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado as well as a wide area in northern Mexico. The top three shots here were taken in Starr Co., Texas, in November, 2004, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens. The bottom two shots showing the two birds on a fence and a single bird on the ground with some flowers, were taken with the same equipment near Marfa, Presidio Co., Texas, in September, 2005.

The six shots immediately below, both left and right, were taken in Starr Co., Texas, in April, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.

The group of six Scaled Quail on the left came to the edge of a small water hole to drink. This shot was taken near Rio Grande City, Starr Co., Texas, in November, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 l IS lens and 1.4X extender.

The Scaled Quail on the left was shot with the same gear as above and in the same location.
