The Short Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma douglasii) occurs across much of the western United States, but it can be fairly uncommon and local in distribution. The animal shown here is a subspecies known as the Mountain Short Horned Lizard (P. d. hernandesi). Within Texas, this species can sometimes be found in the mountainous areas of the western parts of the state. This individual was photographed in a spot known as Elbow Canyon in the Davis Mountains of west Texas in Jeff Davis County, in June, 2005. It was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
