The Smoky Rubyspot (Hetaerina titia) is a large broad-winged damselfly which occurs across the eastern U.S. Nick Donnelly and others have expressed an interest in the variation of wing coloration of this species as it might be related to age, seasonality and other factors. I have created this page to illustrate various differences in wing patterns to assist in this investigation. I will add more photos as time allows. Photo 1: The individual at left was photographed in June 2003 in Travis Co., Texas. This is apparently a typical wing pattern for many individuals in summer.

Photo 2: The individual at left was photographed in June 2003 in Gonzales Co., Texas. Note the solid colored wings.
Photo 3: This one was photographed 20 November 2003 in Gonzales Co., Texas. I saw another half dozen that displayed wings of this pattern.
Photo 4: The rubyspot shown here was photographed at the same time and place as #3 above but showed more dark in the wings.
