The Sooty Dancer (Argia lugens) is a large, dark damselfly of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. It often perches on rocks in stream beds. The top shot was taken in the Chinati Mountains of Presidio Co., Texas in September 2004 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300 mm F/4 L IS lens with a 2X extender and 550 EX flash. The bottom shot of the pair in tandem was taken with the same equipment, also in September, 2004, but at Big Bend Ranch State Park in Presidio Co., Texas.

The next 3 shots of Sooty Dancer were taken in the Davis Mountains, Jeff Davis Co., Texas, in June, 2005, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash. The top shot shows a female while the next two shots show a male.

The male Sooty Dancer on the left was in Presidio Co., Texas, in May, 2008. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
