The Southern Spreadwing (Lestes australis) is widespread across the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. It can be a very common species in many locations. The shot of the male shown in the top image was taken in Kenedy Co., Texas in June 2002, with a Canon EOS 1V and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens with a 1.4X extender and 550 EX flash. This was a film shot on Fuji Velvia.

The Southern Spreadwing in the two shots on the left was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in April, 2007. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
