The Striated Heron (Butorides striatus) is also called Green-backed Heron by some authors. It is a close relative of the Green Heron of The United States and Mexico. The Striated Heron is a very widespread species occurring across most of South America all the way to Tierra del Fuego, parts of Central America, Africa, Asia, China, Australia, and many other areas. The one shown here was at the Polokwane Bird Reserve, Limpopo Province, South Africa, in January, 2006. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II & EF 500mm F/4L IS lens and 2X extender with fill flash.
