The Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) is resident across a large portion of the Central United States and Canada. It prefers short grass prairies but may also be found in parks, golf courses and along roadsides. The animal shown in the top three images here was in the Pawnee National Grasslands of Weld Co., Colorado, in June, 2001. These shots were taken with an EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Provia film. Scroll down for more images.

In June, 2007, I found myself back at the Pawnee National Grasslands in Colorado where I took a number of new images of this ground squirrel. The next 11 images are from that occasion.
