The Varied Bunting (Passerina versicolor) is a beautiful little desert bunting of the southwest whose range barely enters the United States in west Texas as well as parts of New Mexico and Arizona. From a distance the bird looks dark all over, but when seen well it is a flashy creature that is sought out by many bird watchers visiting its range. The singing Varied Bunting seen here was photographed in June, 2001 near Ozona, Crockett Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500 mm F4L IS lens and 2X extender on Fuji Velvia.
The below shots were taken in June, 2005, at the same location as the shot above. These lower shots are digital captures with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4L IS lens and 2X extender.
The next four shots below were taken in May, 2006 in Hidalgo Co., Texas, on the very eastern edge of the range of this species in south Texas. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
