The Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia) is a common butterfly across most of the United States and Mexico. The top shot here was taken along the Nueces River near Barksdale, in Real Co., Texas, in May, 2003, with a Canon EOS 10D and an EF 70-200mm F/2.8 L IS lens and 2X extender.

The underwings of the Variegated Fritillary are quite different from the upper wings. This pair in copula was photographed in April, 2000, in Kenedy Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 3 and an EF 180mm F/3.5 Macro and Fuji Sensia 100 film.
