The Violet-crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica) occurs from the Caribbean slope of Guatemala and Belize into Costa Rica, Panama, and as far south as Columbia and Venezuela. This species is closely related to the Mexican Woodnymph (T. ridgwayi) and Green-crowned Woodnymph (T. fannyi). Formerly, all these species were lumped under one species, the Crowned Woodnymph (T. colombica), but are now all regarded as separate species. The male and female shown here were photographed in October, 1995, at Rancho Naturalista, near Turrialba, Provincia de Cartago, Costa Rica. A Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F4.5 lens with a 50mm extension tube with a Fresnel flash was used for both photos. The film was Fuji Sensia 100.
