Water Dikkop (Burhinus vermiculatus), also called Water Thick-Knee by some authors, is a common resident of aquatic habitats in southern Africa. This bird was flying near it's nest (see below) on the Okavango River near Shakawe, Botswana, in October, 1998. The photos were taken with a Canon EOS 1N & EF 300mm F4L IS lens hand-held on a BushHawk shoulder mount. The film used was Ektachrome Elite 200. Shutter speed unrecorded but probably 1/250 second.

This photo of a Water Dikkop nest with two eggs was taken at the same time and place as the above shot. The nest was within two meters of the river's edge on the bank.
