Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana) is a widespread Central & South American species that ranges from Panama to Argentina. It is extremely common in some areas on the llanos of Venezuela. These photos were taken at Hato El Cedral, Apure, Venezuela, in April, 1992. The three photos presented here were taken with a Canon T-90 & Sigma 500mm F4.5 lens mounted on a tripod. Kodachrome 200 film was used. These birds often forage within a few feet of anacondas and caiman, and sometimes these predators will make a meal out of the bird. The bottom shot shows an immature bird with muddy legs.

This is the same individual as the above photo. Note the extremely long toes of this species (like all jacanas) which allow the bird to walk easily across floating vegetation.
