The White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) breeds across much of the northern United States and most of Canada and Alaska. The species winters in the southern half of the U.S. and into Mexico. Adults have black and white striped crowns while immature birds show tan and brown striped crowns. The bird at left was photographed in Starr Co., Texas, in February, 1998, with a Canon T-90 and Sigma 500mm F/4.5 lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Sensia. The next three shots were all taken in February, 2000, in Kenedy Co., Texas, with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 600mm F/4 L lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia.

The shot on the right was a digital capture in December, 2002, in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, with a Canon D-60 and 600mm F/4 L lens.

The immature White-crowned Sparrow below was at Bosque del Apache N.W.R., Socorro Co., New Mexico, in November, 2005. The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.

The adult White-crowned Sparrow immediately below was a digital capture in Caprocks Canyon, S.P., Briscoe Co., Texas, in December, 2005. It was shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.

The next two shots below were taken at San Antonio, Socorro Co., New Mexico, in November, 2006, with a Canon EOS 1D
Mark II and EF 600 mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. The top image shows an immature bird while the 2nd shows an adult.
