The White-tailed Hawk (Buteo albicaudatus) is one of the most attractive hawks in North America. Within the U.S., it is only known from south Texas, but the species is widespread in the tropics and South America and ranges south to Argentina. The top three shots shown here were taken in May, 2002, in Kenedy Co., Texas with a Canon EOS 1V and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender on Fuji Velvia. See below for more photos.

The two shots below, of an adult White-tailed Hawk in flight, were taken in Hidalgo Co., Texas in May, 2006
with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.

In April, 2000, I spent a short time in a blind set up on a White-tailed Hawk nest with young in Kenedy Co., Texas. Shown here is a shot of an adult feeding a young as well as a shot of the two youngsters. They chicks were about 2 weeks old when this shot was taken. The photos were taken with a Canon EOS 1N and EF 600mm F/4 L lens on Fuji Velvia.
