The Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata) is a common and widespread species. It breeds across the northern half of the United States and throughout Canada. It winters in the southern half of the United States, throughout Mexico and Central America and even into northern South America. Most field guides still refer to this particular species as Common Snipe, but it was changed to Wilson's Snipe recently by the A.O.U. The bird lives in wet, marshy areas where it probes into the mud with its very long, straight bill. The top four images were taken in southern Tamaulipas, Mexico, in December, 2004. The next shot was in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in December, 2004, while the sixth shot down was also in Austin, but in December, 2005. The six images here were all digital captures with with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
