The Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) is a widespread and fairly common duck of much of North America. Unlike most other ducks, this species is often found in thickly wooded, watery habitats including swamps, woodland marshes and river bottoms. The species is a cavity nester and will readily use artificial nesting boxes as well as its natural nesting sites of hollow trees. The seven shots here of male and female Wood Ducks were taken in New Braunfels, Comal Co., Texas, in January, 2007, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
