The White-winged Scoter (Melanitta fusca) is a diving duck which breeds on fresh-water ponds and lakes in northwest Canada and Alaska. It winters mainly along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States with a few venturing along the Gulf coast. It is typically fairly rare in Texas, especially inland. The female or immature shown here was at Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in November, 2005. It was photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.
