Wyoming Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus elegans). These photos were taken in mid June, 2001, at Red Rocks Lake N.W.R., Beaverhead Co., Montana. This location is in extreme southern Montana, near the junction of the borders of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming, about 25 miles west of West Yellowstone, Wyoming. Initially I was not sure whether these animals were Columbian Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus), Uinta Ground Squirrels (S. armatus), or some other species. Thanks to help from Mike Parker, the refuge manager at Red Rock Lakes N.W.R., they have been identified as Wyoming Ground Squirrels. The shots were taken with a Canon EOS 3 and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens on Fuji Velvia film.

In June, 2007, I found myself back at Red Rocks Lake N.W.R., and took a few more images of Wyoming Ground Squirrels. The following 8 images were taken on that occasion with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
